Natural Honey Exports by Country September 2019

Global sales from natural honey exports by country totaled US$2.264 billion in 2018.

Overall, the value of natural honey exports fell by an average -4% for all exporting countries since 2014 when natural honey shipments were valued at $2.4 billion. Year over year, global exports of natural honey decreased in value by -5.6% from 2017 to 2018.

Among continents, European countries sold the highest dollar value worth of natural honey exported during 2018 with shipments amounting to $878 million or 38.8% of overall international honey sales. That percentage compares with 24.2% from Asian exporters, 15% from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and 12.3% from Oceania (mostly New Zealand and Australia). Smaller percentages came North America (9.1%) and Africa (0.6%).

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for natural honey is 0409.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of natural honey during 2018.

  1. China: US$249.3 million (11% of total natural honey exports)
  2. New Zealand: $245.5 million (10.8%)
  3. Argentina: $169.7 million (7.5%)
  4. Germany: $140.5 million (6.2%)
  5. Mexico: $120.4 million (5.3%)
  6. Spain: $107.3 million (4.7%)
  7. India: $102.4 million (4.5%)
  8. Ukraine: $98.2 million (4.3%)
  9. Brazil: $95.4 million (4.2%)
  10. Hungary: $90.6 million (4%)
  11. Belgium: $77.6 million (3.4%)
  12. Vietnam: $67.6 million (3%)
  13. Canada: $61.2 million (2.7%)
  14. Romania: $49.4 million (2.2%)
  15. Poland: $42.9 million (1.9%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped about three-quarters (75.9%) of all natural honey exports during 2018.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing natural honey exporters since 2014 were: New Zealand (up 46%), Canada (up 33.1%), India (up 32.7%) and Belgium (up 6.2%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported natural honey sales were led by: Vietnam (down -49.2%), Mexico (down -18.1%), Argentina (down -17%), Spain (down -13.6%) and Romania (down -9.1%).
